The International Water Association (IWA) and Toilet Board Coalition (TBC) have come together to present a fresh vision of a public health ecosystem that extracts new value from wastewater. We advocate that disease surveillance through sanitation and wastewater systems must become a key component of future disease outbreak prevention and management strategies for cities, communities, and businesses. We aim to provide insights on how the current crisis with COVID-19 is creating innovation opportunities around essential services and public health, accelerating the adoption of digital technologies, and reinforcing the value of remote monitoring.
